St. Mary's - Wexford Camino

St. Mary's Wexford

St Mary’s resembled St Patrick’s but was more beautiful in the details. It is generally believed to be the last parochial church to be used inside the town walls.

St Mary’s was struck by lightning on 4th June 1822. Its bell is in the present day Christian Brothers’ monastery. It is believed the bell was sold and was used in the dockyard until a young priest called James Johnson recognised it and bought it and gave it to the Brothers.

There was a gateway connecting this graveyard and the garden of the house of Bishop French in Peter Street. Cromwell’s soldiers attacked the house in 1649. Bishop French’s servant and gardener were killed.

Prayer

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
